Absorbing Music

“Surrounding our guests with a vast array of meaningful artwork is a natural extension of the cruise experience.”

Orlando Ashford, Former President, Holland America Line

ArtLink collaborated with acclaimed interior designer, Adam D. Tihany for Holland America Line on three vast and exciting projects: the Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, and most recently, Rotterdam. Throughout the history of Holland America Line, the company’s purpose remained the same: to give its passengers once-in-a-lifetime experiences during their journeys. This legacy continues onboard the new Rotterdam, transforming the passenger’s individual observation into a one-of-a-kind sensational experience through sight.

The art collection focuses on artworks in a variety of media to explore the way we hear, perceive and understand music: from the path a sound-wave makes to the nostalgic moments each of us cherishes from our own unique experiences of music.

Star Quality

Combining the worlds of music and fashion, the art collection in the Club Orange Restaurant presents photographs of iconic figures known for their bold wardrobe choices together with vibrantly coloured contemporary artworks influenced by patterns of the restaurant’s Hermès-inspired design.

Structure of Sound

Through a sense of feather-light movement as the spheres appear to billow up from the solitary, fixed grand piano, Italy-based artist Federico Picci creates an illusion of music in a physical form. The gently colored orbs and warm light in the high-ceilinged white room create a peaceful calm mood that invites the viewers into a meditation on music.

Just as the balloons emerge, rise, fall, and appear to be filling the open space, so do musical notes; constantly moving through time and space. This is why ‘Balloon Concerto’ by Picci, also a pianist, is so intriguing, as it captures an art form which by its very nature cannot be depicted in a visual format.

Emphasizing the connection between one's memories and musical excerpts, artworks in the Explorer's Lounge will present the concept of sailing trips and how a journey once taken can create an unbreakable relationship between places and music. The works include skylines of different places that blur into sound waves by American/Ukrainian artist Anna Marinenko.
